Exact amount of those tarrifs is irrelevant, they just need to be high enough to coerce enough countries to sign up into new world order(i.e. peg their currencies to dollar in exchange for merket access and military protection)

That's industrialization by import substitution and it's the basic of any industrial policy. It used to be good enough in the 19th century. But we live in a globalized era where this isn't enough anymore. Asian tigers complemented it by doing a careful study of potential export-oriented high tech industries that the country can invest on.

>>25773260 Non-protected industries in those countries performed fine during the time they tried protectionism, also they generally only put up heavyhanded policies for a few years before walking back. Korea and Taiwan have both spent much longer being open to trade than protectionist.

>>25773278 Modern industries are a product of state intervention and they do not exist without state help. The industrial revolution was a political and bureaucratic revolution, not an economic or technological one. The british state learned to intertwine industries with state interests and national finances better than any other. Japan went from an industrial marvel to a stagnant economy as soon as they abandoned industrial policy int he 80s and 90s. Every country that abandoned industrial policy deindustrialized, even the mega hegemon America. The thing is that is industries were meant for war. Nationalist countries that industrialized in the 19th century were doing so because of nation-state competition and even war among one another. So they were willing to support their respective industries for as long as necessary to support their sovereignty or even existence. You can still see this happening in contested regions like Israel and Turkey. The thing with Asian tigers is that they rose in an era of murkan globalization and hegemony. The world was stable and there was plenty of resources in the international market, no need for nationalism and imperialism. Murka gave them protection against foreign enemies, but they still had to deal with internal threats, mainly socialist and commie movements. So murka gave them a leg up to develop economically and their give people good life, thus lessening the popularity of such left wing movements. Export-oriented industrialization allowed these countries to import a lot of stuff while still keeping a trade balance. This gave their people jobs while also giving them good international purchase power. Read this book.
