There is a reason Trump is resorting to tarriffs to address our trade deficit problems. It's because the solutions other countries use don't work for us. Normally, a country facing long-term trade deficits like we have would devalue their currency to make their products more competitive domestically and internationally. This doesn't work for the US for the very reason thirdies claim the US has some unique advantage: The Dollar's status as preferred reserve and trade currency. The dollar is basically the standard that everyone values their currency relative to. When the dollar supply goes up, every other country increases their money supply to match. This is what Trump is alluding to in the quote.

>>25772568 America getting back more than you give is a problem for who? It's foreigners getting ripped off on trade. America's totally capable of running an extreme welfare state because the Feds can get a free lunch from foreigners but doesn't want to. Foreign demand for dollars can be regulated and foreign dollar holders actually can be taxed in a lot of ways. Taxing American imports is just retarded and hurts consumers/businesses using cheap imported materials/etc. The issue is how all the globalist institutions like IMF/World Bank were setup by America to promote free capital movement and the natural result is extreme imbalance... Keynes said that would happen but the alternative is sorts of organized managed trade that blumpf isn't building institutions to create, Trump just is trying to flip America into surplus from deficit but trying to everyone else into permanent trade deficits won't work >This is what Trump is alluding to in the quote. No he's not, you're sanewashing >>25772681 >Basically the rest of the world, collectively, has more control over the value of the Dollar than the US Government does. No it doesn't, foreigners trying to pump dollar can't beat the Feds if they really want to devalue.

Trumps wants this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Import_substitution_industrialization But the world moved on ever since, US is too dependent and integrated to the global market and supply chains to address that. They would had more luck trying to foster a revolution or civil war in China to stop their factories on it's tracks than try to turn back the dials and made all to be "made in USA".

>>25772934 >There's no fundamental reason for the US to be consistently running trade deficits with all that our economy has going for it. Yes there is. American is rich and Americans like buying cheap stuff and getting deals. You could stop buying and importing stuff and save more but America running a surplus is what's really impossible. How the hell are you going to sell more to the turd world than you buy? >The problem is that our currency is overvalued and we can't do anything about that because our trade partners won't allow it. You could literally spend more money. If America bought even more the dollar would decline. That's all you need to do, the government could deficit spend on some mega projects like high speed rail and the dollar would weaken. Much better than taxing imports

I just don’t like road infrastructure. The one silver lining of global homo is bike lanes are actually better. People can’t afford nice cars anymore anyways. And cars in general take up too much space. Why do people need a big SUV to drive 3 miles a day in the suburbs? When it snows it’s nice sure. This is at the same time as he is pursuing every inflationary policy the office of the president can possibly engage in, which will push the Federal Reserve to increase interest rates, thus adding at least another half trillion in sheer interest payments on that deficit, which itself is set to go from 5.8% to 6.8% within the decade.
