I can operate a manual transmission on a motorcycle and tractor.
I have never driven a car, van, or truck that had a clutch though.
The last one I even rode in as a passenger was a imported car that was 25 years old.

Why not? I just hate using the clutch, that's why I prefer automatic.
The only thing I could not really get used to in a rental, was the semi-manual in the Smart, where you did not have a clutch, but still had to change the gears. Seemed like a nice solution to me, but my brain refused to remember to shift without pushing the pedal.

Why do you even need a car in such a small country? It's the USA, Russia, Chiner who really need cars because the public transportation there is horrible. For instance, I have a dacha
russoid cheap summer residency in the countryside in 200 km from my actual residency and I have no choice to get there but driving a car.

I'm the kind of guy who hates latency in user interfaces. With manual transmission, I can shift into the correct gear before I need to. With automatic transmission, I have to wait for the transmission.
That said, if I was driving every day, possibly even in a city, I would probably like an AT. In my experience, driving up to 2-3 times a week is fun, but more often than that feels like a chore, so in that case it's about minimizing effort.

to go shopping in Germany, jk. Seriously, the optimal combination, irrespective of costs, is to use the public transport for daily business and trips to the city and a car for anything outside peak hours or slightly off the grid. You can live without a car (I currently do, but will buy something used in the summer) and get along fine, including eg. winter holidays, but it is a loss of comfort if you do not have a fallback.

They are "not slow" at best, but never "before you need it" like manual.
My parents have a 10+ years old Mercedes B class with DSG. DSG is theoretically a very sporty transmission, but in this old people car it's tuned to feel like an old-timey automatic transmission. The steering feel is like dead fish as well, which makes the whole car very boring to drive.

A couple of months ago, I switched to another car with a manual transmission, and so far, I’ve liked it. I let my kids shift gears when they ride in my truck. My two youngest need alot of instruction but my oldest knows the feel of the truck when I hit the clutch so has got it down. Its fun. Will be his truck one day. He is learning the shifter with the wrong hand but it wont matter, he'll figure it out.

I have only driven automatics as rentals and I hate how slow they are to respond and how they drone and are shit at revving up.
DSG is pretty good though.

The only use I can think of for an automatic is towing, i.e. some truck to pull boat trailers, tow construction equipment et.c..
A manual would be fine there too but automatics with their slow and droning feel is good for towing.

It not about the feel you retard, trucks have automatics since a torque converter is more durable than a clutch, and there's no torque disruption when switching gears, that's important during towing.

CVTs of course have their own extra shit rubber band feel especially at low RPM.

Nobody in their right mind is towing with a manual. A manual has only an advantage in high RPM applications (sportscars).

Most of the semi trucks on the road still have manual. All the guys inna trades I have worked with prefer manual for towing. I dont know what to tell you. Maybe just american things.

Well there are definite advantages to manual like if you are towing heavy and need to stay in a certain power band to handle the load.

Clutches are more reliable and simple to fix than automatic transmissions. Also changing a friction plate isn't that big or expensive of a job. I have exchanged a whole clutch set on a car of mine with leaf spring, friction plate, release bearing and slave cylinder in an evening on the parking lot of my house.

You mean CVT. On mopeds, it's kinda good. On cars you often have that "rubber band" feel, engine RPM and acceleration are independent from each other.

Again, clutches cannot handle high torques over extended periods of time. There's a good reason that trucks are automatic. Read a fucking book about mechanical engineering.

Clutch is really easy to replace. Auto transmission repair or new is so expensive. Replaced my clutch just a few years ago on my truck. Bought a stage 2 because I had planned to swap to a 350 v8 I have instead of my v6 vortek thats in my s10. But whatevers that project cant wait. Life too busy to tear down my truck for a month.

A manual has almost zero performance advantages compared to a flappy paddle automatic transmission. There's slight performance advantages in a manual car, compared to a regular automatic, but acceleration and gear changing and racing? No.

Yes, my parents' B class has paddles, but they are VERY slow to react. I don't know if it is actually a second (or more) or just feels like it... and the thing has seven gears. When I coast up to a certain roundabout, I want to shift from 7th to 3rd (engine braking). It takes forever.
