I google stree-viewed the route. Yeah, lots of it has no side walk, and is long stretches where I suspect trucks would speed through. Also 8 miles is unreasonable for a 7 year old to walk to get to school. When I planned hikes for day camp the most I would ever have them do in one stretch was 5 miles then plan long breaks. Even then, the pace they typically kept meant they would do a mile every 30 minutes. So 8 miles at a average 7 year old pace, making the huge assumption that they didn't slow down or stop at any point, is a 4 hour walk, which is also exhausting for a kid and would put them in no condition to be even remotely productive at school. Not saying the charges fully fit, but I will say that is bad parenting. If you are going to make a kid that young walk that far they should be accompanied at the very least. That isn't a short walk. That is a whole journey for a 7 year old. It would take them hours to complete it at the typical pace a average 7 year old can realistically keep. It's also pretty unreasonable to expect a 7 year old to be attentive in watching a younger sibling. To say 7 year olds are irresponsible and have low attention span is like saying water is wet. This mother is confused, children are not little adults. You can not expect them to do what adults can do.

I walked two miles to school sometimes, starting in the fifth grade. Ten years old I suppose, maybe 11. I think eight miles for an unaccompanied seven year old is too far, maybe a mile in a healthy community.
