He is known for writing an essay on the French revolution as well as prosecuting the governor general of what was then British Bengal. I haven't read his stuff in donkey's years but the gist of his thinking was that the American revolution was justified and came from a pool of reasonable thought whilst the French one simply wasn't and was barbaric. Also the imperial strategy should grant the colonials human rights and co-operate with local rulers instead of riding roughshod over them like the Germans and Ruskies did to their subjects.
