I want a good external hard drive (pref. SSD) that can last for at least 20 years. Storage capacity should be in the terabytes. Any advice?

Listen, if you're storing it away, the SSD will start losing data after half a year disconnected.

flash devices can't be trusted to last, they're too easy to manufacture sloppily hard drives have to be built with extreme quality control to get them to work at all, if they're for external use being kept in a drawer their bulkiness and non-drop-safety aren't issues and they are clearly the superior choice only an idiot would buy a terabyte drive when two 500gb drives can be gotten for a tenth the price I am not a paedophile either btw

>>25653649 You have no options that aren't professional grade and with acceptable risk profile. There is no technology for large amounts of data that lasts twenty years without someone knowledgeable taking care of it. Best bet is to find a company that specializes in long term data storage and take a 20 year contract.

>>25653656 >>25653649 More specifically, archive grade optical media exists but it's exotic and not something you've heard of, or want to afford. This for example: https://pro.sony/en_HR/products/optical-disc Tapes exist but drives are expensive and they want to be stored properly (with temperature control). And you better have some way of getting a working drive 20 years down the road, and have it be compatible with whatever tape you have.

Danke you all for your advice. I will see if a blu-ray disk will work. Do I have to burn my data to the disk permanently? Is it possible to encrypt data this way?
