I recently started a new job as a specialist in a prison, and I have a colleague there, a guard in his early 30s, who can’t stop complaining about every little aspect of his work. Apparently, he’s been doing this for seven years. When he recently made a snide remark, saying that he has to work so many shifts, even on weekends, while I, as a specialist, have it easy with my 9-to-5 schedule, I’d had enough. I told him that, unlike him, I’ve spent half a decade on my education, and he hasn’t. I said it was pathetic to spend the whole day whining, and that he needed to grow a pair and finally be a man. I told him he should either accept his job or, if he couldn’t handle it, quit and find something better. Since then, he (thankfully) hasn’t spoken to me, although, of course, he talks about me behind my back even more. I really can’t stand people who complain about a job they’ve chosen for themselves.
