I prefer Dostoevsky. The Brothers Karamazov is the greatest book ever written. Anna Karenina is the second best.

Nah. I'm soon to be 35 and read a lot of russian literature. Truth is, brevity is the sister of talent and real genius is the ability to describe complex things by simple language without losing the tint of correctness.

I agree with him. I can not read war and peace and dostoevskyi. It is too long. Gogols stories are more entertainment.

Short stories are better for art. Long stories are boring, because they only milk one specific theme over hundreds of pages. It's intellectual masturbation to write long stories.

Yes I think War and Peace is the best book ever written, however you need to read the version where you clearly see which part was written in Russian and which in French, and not just have everything translated to English.
I heard many people critize Tolstoy, because there is too of his own opinions about the world included in the book, too much moralizing. But this is exactly why I'm a huge fan of Tolstoy. I think an author should speak his mind clearly.
I go to theater sometimes and it annoys me how a play discusses some real life issue, and the author doesn't want to state what is his opinion about who is wrong and who is right, and what he would do about it!! It's seen as unartistic, and beneath them!!! That's ridiculous!!! It's cowardly and lazy!!!

He was a keen observer of human psychology, but cannot be considered superior in this latter aspect to Montaigne, Machiavelli, the French moralists, Leopardi, Nietzsche, etc.
As for his stories, they are indeed very good. I believe Anna Karenina, in particular, is a very great novel, but I fail to see how it "rises above" the other very good novels that were written around the same era, including those of Stendhal, Conrad, Flaubert, Balzac, Dickens etc. It seems to be a question of personal preference, and my preference lies with Flaubert and Dickens for style, and Conrad for subject matter.
