I like buying pasta sauce with real Italian tomatoes, so I bought this brand last week (found it at Target). It says “made in Italy” all over it but nowhere does it say the tomatoes are from Italy. I have reason to believe they’re using imported tomatoes from Asia and bottling them in Italy. The parent company was sued for false advertising for doing something similar with olive oil a few years ago. Such a fucking scam man. Just spend your money on an American brand at that point. If you want a good Italian brand use Mutti.

AFAIK even "made with Italian tomatoes" is legal to contain up to 49% of Chink tomato concentrate.

You're probably better off buying tomatoes that have been canned in the US. So long as you understand which variety is being used at what farms.

It's a hassle to peel and stew fresh tomatos and the benefit is marginal unless you've really great tomatos. I buy canned tomato, whole peeled or diced, doesn't matter, stew them, add spices, then one of the tiny cans of tomato paste near the end to bring to color from pink back to nice red.
Bernd Wed, 12 Mar 2025 00:46:14 GMT No. 25620022
Cost doing it with cheap walmart canned and some paste is maybe a $1.75 for a pint or so all in and is tastier than any of those prebottled brands in my opinion.

They do the same with pasta. One brand said something to the effect of "Italy's favorite pasta!" but when you looked at the bottom it said it was made in some US state. Yea I'm sure Italians are buying pasta made in fucking Wisconsin.
