Why didn't Australia just get new JMSDF lithium Diesel Electrics? They got coatings and in lithium battery mode, it's a black hole. You only need nuclear if you're going to shoot out in Artic Circle.

Euro navies are designed around day trips in the Med and Jap subs are designed for home defense. No-one western nation has the same requirements as Australia aside from the US and the UK, hence AUKUS
