This reminds me of how we had a thread (also made by SWE, maybe even the same) about being industry-grade refurbished HDDs for his NAS.
A Bavarian-ball chimed in and said something about security concerns. The HDD controller could be flashed with malicious firmware. I accepted this as a viable threat scenario.
Few weeks later I realized: Who says the HDDs I buy new on Amazon weren't returned by someone who flashed it and are sold by Amazon as new again?
As far as I am aware retailers
'can sell goods' that were returned by the buyer for reasons within a short period after the purchase and don't have any flaws
'''as new''' again.
How do I know China doesn't buy a lot of hardware on Amazon DE flashes it with the China virus, returns it and buyer then buy that malicious stuff?
