You should just read LOTR books. I think they are very well written and I read them long before Peter Jackson's movies existed. I dislike the movies because they are so good that they made normal illiterate people fans of the series.

LOTR movies are about as good as they could have been made. About the only complaint I had was Arwen but in retrospect that actually worked quite well and didnt contradict Tolkien too much
