It's not an inconsistency in the story. It may or may not be the true motivation, but they made a decision to fold the two astronauts into their iss crew and extend their stay rather than bring them back sooner. It may be that them staying longer is nasa's usual reaction and the Elon snub is only imagined, or may be right. No way to know. No plothole, though.
