MDE podcast made a good point that when you were a kid or young man and you played pixel graphic games or games with low resolution and low polygons your brain would fill in the blanks with imagination and the world would still feel real now that they increased the resolution and polygons there is less for your brain to fill in and you accept it more at face value i.e. a poor simulation of reality its the uncanny valley paradox where the more realistic something gets the better it gets until it tries too hard to be realistic also, the focus on better graphics has meant less resources get spent in a development cycle on features games from the early 2000s have more non-online features than games that come out today

AAA's keep using the shithead idea that games should look like stylized movies and have authentic camera, editing, and sound artifacts as if games are cast and filmed on lots and soundstages. My eyes are not panaflex cameras, I'm not watching these fucking cutscenes on a 30' screen in a movie theatre and the only sound I give a fuck about is whatever is actually a damn game function. Fuck particles and flares and THX/Dolby and Celebrity voice actors. Toaster settings with clear UI and human understandable game mechanics. Goat Simulator was righteous. Bernd Mon, 03 Mar 2025 23:02:11 GMT No. 25558869
Games became much bigger in every aspect. So, the production cost jumped up exponentially. So, everyone uses a lot of ready solutions which leads to bloat. It's similar to web design. Most of the sites, if written individually from scratch, would be hundreds, or thousands times smaller than they are. But if you try to actually create a modern site from scratch you would need so much money, time, and people working on it that you should be of Google or Microsoft size at least to make it happen. Hence, bloat is inevitable trade-off. And with the bloat other challenges arise. Such as optimization issues to actually being able to sell your game to a substantial number of potential customers.

They could have spend computational resources on stuff like better physics or better AI, instead they spend it on higher res textures and models with more polygons. Reason for this I think that even if you make game with super cool physics or genius AI it will be hard to show in trailers and screenshots, so marketing the game will be hard. Back in the day technological leaps were easier to show: for example Doom 2.5D engine -> Quake full 3D engine or sprite RTS -> 3D units RTS.

I enjoyed Dwarf Fortress for years without a custom tileset. Some of what is considered bad graphics could also be a great stylistic choice depending on what the dev is going for. I never understood why normies are so obsessed with SUPER MEGA ULTIMATE GAIDEN REALISTIC GRAPHICS(tm).

>>25559320 no it's not you fucking retard, i dont think a single game made after 2004 has used that method unless it's some low fidelity indie game stylized to look like a game older than a 2004 game. it CAN'T even be done that way with modern graphics because the post processing effects don't work properly when using this trick. for a detailed mirror like one in a bathroom it needs to be raytraced per-pixel, and for any lesser reflections, SSR or cubemapping based solutions are used

>>25558840 From my POV, Doom 2016 is already slop tier. The sound effects are trashy movie tier, the monsters are uninspired and the engine (whose technology is great) and art are kinda fighting each other. The engine seems to smooth / interpolate movements somehow, but the art people decided to do a LOT of stop-and-go jerky movements, copying some dumb action movie tropes. I hate the jerky movements (glory kills and other scripted movements) and I hate its interaction with the motion smoothing engine, it feels icky and wrong. "No regenerating health" but enemies inexplicably dropping health and ammo, much more if you're low, is also really dumb. Do regenerating health or (much preferred) don't, don't pretend that you aren't doing it but then effectively do it anyway, just very awkwardly.
