Wagner dood. They reformed into AfrikaKorps (!) yet are fighting in Kharkiv, eastern Ukraine. The new Afrika Corps do have one base in Burkina Faso which was acquired last year before their redeployment.
2. Middle East
Syria dood, wat nou? Has Russia negotiated lease of their bases with the Arabs? They have no other presence in MENA aside from this. As an aside, has anyone heard anything from Assad recently?
3. Europe
There will be British (and maybe French?) soldiers celebrating a chilly Christmas on the Black Sea this year for the first time in nearly 170 years. Sweden and Finland have also joined NATO and Europeans are currently considering joining up forces with some zeal.
Russian power is ebbing round the world and their power over a select handful of European countries is in rapid retreat.
What will Putin's legacy be? Is there any hope for him or an expansionist Russia? Suppose Russia keeps Crimea and the Donbass, will this be a sufficient prize for the losses mentioned above?

I would wager that strategic benefit is nullified by the growing presence of NATO troops on the border. NATO lake isn't just a meme either. Access to the Baltic, Black and Mediterranean Seas is now even more restricted than before.
I'm not sure how things would have panned out any better had Putin sat on his hands after the Euromaidan protests though. Standing still and doing nothing isn't something autocracies can get away with unlike democracies.

2 isn't really true either is it? Russia has abysmal relations with every faction in Syria after Assad. The new government in Syria hasn't got round to tackling the question of the bases because it has other priorities for now. It will eventually become a problem for Russia even if it isn't one now.
Even if Russia strikes a favourable position with the new Syria, which is plausible, my point is that Russia is weaker in MENA than it was before. The trajectory of Russian power in the Middle East is downwards.

The Americans were stubborn, as per, at Munich. At Paris, the Germans were vacillating and flaccid about committing their soldiers and the need for re-arming.
But last Friday changed a lot. The top of the EU, Ursula von der Leyen, is singing from the same hymn sheet as the British and the French. If Germany joins us, we will probably have all of Europe on our side too.
