Having the EU form a united defense approach, one that is good enough to fight RU and China, is the last thing American administration wants. The fact that Nato exists has been the US's strong arm in terms of trans-atlantic politics. A lot of concessions were gotten out of the fact that the US is the backbone of Nato and will cover our asses against Russia.
Americans, in return syphon off most of the wealth. If the EU needs more funding for defense, the EU will focus more on domestic production and commerce and that will mean less cash going to the US.
If the EU has to cut ties with the US, it will hurt the US greatly, not just us in europe.
Trump doesn't actually wants to cut ties with europe, he wants to pressure europe to agree to his proposals, and not just spend money on their own defense, but actually pay america for being the great protector. He tried his bluff, but instead to leading to his outcome, europe instead now distances itself from america.
You can cope that its all just 4d chess of trump and he knows exactly what he is doing, but its not. Its simply a retardet art of the deal strategy that backfired. If he actually wanted to leave nato, he would start the process for it. Instead he backtracked already, and won't leave nato, because he never wanted to leave nato in the first place.
But instead we have magatards now that never even thought about nato much, that now just think nato is actually bad for america, because trump made these talking points to put pressure on europe, so they just go with it.
I mean the nice thing is now, we can find out in real time. Regardless if trump leaves nato or not, americas role will become less relevant if europe actually forms a strong defense and aliance against russia. Which is exactly what the US wouldn't want, because they lose all leverage.
And the people actually running the country also know this.
