I believe this goes deeper than Christianity
The Greek world was more accustomed to esotericism and the myths from Egypt and middle east, hermes trismegistus was talking about "nous" the divine essence surrounding us, that can enlighten us if we meditate upon it, which sounds a lot like the holy spirit in Christianity
The Latin world, or western Rome came later into contact with the Greek culture and spirituality, they didn't had the time to understand such concepts, they were in contrast more practical and more concerned with the material world
The schism between the two churches can also be looked as a difference in understanding the holy trinity and each role in it, from a philosophical/spiritual point of view
It comes clear that there were differences when you look at it like that, add some political/power shenanigans and you got yourself a crisis
