Personally, I think chickens are cheap and easy enough to maintain that most people should have some, or invest in a communal coop that distributes in their neighborhood/region. We live in such a manner, and even get to sell "farm raised" eggs at the market for 8 USD a dozen when there isn't a shortage of birds.
