I believe it's part of the bargaining with Putin. Putin didn't believe his (America's) motives, so Trump had to prove his conviction on the world stage by sending a message (which is getting a lot of heat from even America's allies). Now that Putin is on side, they turn to Zelensky and offer a way out for both.
You can't start successful negotiations as a mediator with both sides deadlocked against each other unless you want it to take years.
