Necessity is the mother of invention. Writing was developed so governments could tell how much tax had been paid and how how many rations had been given to their workers. The wheel is useless to them because their island is small and everything they need can easily be carried around without building the roads that wheels would require. They do have small boats that they use for fishing. Bigger boats for travel are useless to them because they don't want to meet strangers.
