Basic/easy food is always important. You have to make due with what you have and create the best possible dish. Food is important for moral. Think about times of hardship. War, recession, famine. You only have just enough to kill the hunger. Make the most out of it. You need the energy later on.

I really like the idea. Sitting around with some snobs or elderly folk. Enjoying nice food. Once or twice a month the group meets up at the house of one of the members who cooks for all of them. After some time, when everyone showed their specials there will be a search for new excitement. Maybe culinary topics can be chosen randomly and one just has to perform. Yes I can imagine it quite entertaining.
