I guess it seems to be a rule if St (or Sp) is at the beginning of the word or if it's at the end. If it's at the end and you pronounce it as scht, then that's most often dialect (Bavarians do it too). Normal (Hochdeutsch) is st though.

S* at the beginning and pronounced as Sch. Although I think very old Northern Germans pronounce it as "Sport" and not "Schport"

I think I had a Swabian class mate many years ago and she also pronounced lustig as luschtig. Is that proper Swabian or was she just a little bit weird?
