Basically Slice-of-Life Highschool drama set in a vaguely dickensian Fantasy-Version of Oliver Twist. The combination made it fun to read. Its also a celebration of "classic" british culture which doesn't exist anymore.

I envy you so much OP, you can actually watch the Harry Potter movies for the first time. You'll enjoy it, and even if you don't it's still a hell of a lot better than modern movies these days.

The book was an excellent postmodernist work, with self-referential structure which basically grew with Harry from book to book. It is a textbook example of an "unreliable narrator" - the events are shown as perceived by a kid (and as he was growing up his perception changed, too), so they're oversimplified, but you can guess what was really happening in the adult world through multiple hints.
The movies were flashy and filled with action, what else do you need for success.
Bernds like to dismiss it as a "book for children" because they maybe read the first one and took it for face value.

to me it was basically like school, but magic.
I remember I would go to school library and read alchemy books or sneak around at night because they did it in harry potter. (yes I was a kid)
I wasn't particularly impressed by hogharts or whatever wince that was basically like my boarding school.

I was literally just roleplaying. the school was established around then tho. we had freedom to just go to the library and do whatever which was actually really cool looking back. otherwise everyone went outside.
