It's not about salvation, the Pope doesn't get you your salvation, you misunderstood that part. Papal Infallibility can be also used to canonize saints, meaning that a saved soul in heaven can be declared saint by the Pontiff using Papal Infallibility to complete the canonization process, it doesn't mean that the Pope decided someone was made saint just because he wanted to put someone in heaven but it's rather that a person in heaven is declared saint of the Church.
