Simple editing - avidemux.
Advanced editing - pirate something, like sony vegas. I'm sure there's better software than that though.

Blender is free.
FFmpeg is also free. If you do not mind learning command lines.

To start, get something simple and free. The people I know who edit professionally use Adobe Premiere but I doubt its a good idea to start off with it. From what I understand, DaVinci Resolve and a youtube tutorial is a good way to start.

All editors are basically the same. You piece clips and frames together on the time scale (or few, switching between them) and add effects/filters/whatever.
Once you get the hang of it and know what you need, you'll be able to see how some software is shittier than another. As usual anything open-source or free is extremely limited but you don't need some gigabloat for a tiny project.
The made on the left looks too armenian. The right one is okay.

Davinci resolve mainly.
Learned most things from watching youtube videos and practicing what I just learned with whatever random clips I had on my drive.
While with a phone or whatever you can generate clips to work with pretty fast, you don't even really need that. Any of the junk you probably downloaded over the years also can be used for practice.
The key though is always practice the new concept you just learned on your own while it's still fresh or it probably won't stick.

Who the fuck uses Blender as a primary video editor?
I mean you technically can do it but it be a bit like using a truck to crack open walnuts.
