Daria Rudneva, 33, a doctoral student from Moscow, is to be deported from Sweden. When she came here four years ago, she got involved in organizing Russians in Sweden who are against the war. According to the Swedish Security Service, she poses a security threat, reports Ekot. In April 2022, DN met doctoral student Daria Rudneva outside the Russian embassy on Kungsholmen in Stockholm. She came to Sweden from Moscow in 2021 on a university exchange, to conduct research in mathematics and physics at Stockholm University. When the war broke out, she was full of fighting spirit – despite a fear of reprisals, she felt compelled to take a stand against the war. – After seeing the developments, there was no way to remain silent, she said at the time. Her stance – and the fact that she was one of the founders of the so-called Russian Anti-War Committee – made her hope to stay in Sweden to change Russia from the outside. Now Ekot and Sveriges Radio's program Konflikt are reporting that the Security Service has assessed that she constitutes a security threat, due to her research. - I was completely shocked when I received the decision. It feels very unfair. My research is about super-theoretical mathematics, completely without military use, says Daria Rudneva to both Sveriges Radio and DN. Daria Rudneva has appealed the Migration Board's deportation decision, which means that she is prohibited from returning to Sweden and the Schengen area for the next 20 years. - It is incomprehensible. I cannot defend myself because I do not know what the decision is based on. No one has asked me what my research is about, parts of the decision are confidential, says Daria Rudneva. When DN met her at the beginning of Russia's offensive war, she described the Russian community outside Russia as "quite disorganized" and without unifying force. – I think the war will change that, she said then, when she had just started the movement the Russian Anti-War Committee – Russians Against War. The aim was partly to show Swedes that many Russians are against the war, but also to reach out to those who are behind Putin's actions. – I talk to those who support the war. You can see how they have been brainwashed by Russian propaganda and believe everything that is said in Russian state media. They are not trying to find the truth but rather something convenient that fits their worldview, she explained. She was the movement's spokesperson for a short period but was expelled in 2022, according to Ekot. She was accused of trying to create conflicts and division. – The so-called conflicts I created.... I don't know what is in their heads, she tells Ekot about those accusations. According to Ekot, the Security Service assesses that her research could be useful to Russia and could be used by its military or other sanctioned units. The Security Service was reportedly alerted to Rudneva by Stockholm University, which in the spring of 2022 considered that the doctoral student had acted “deviantly”. Among other things, she is said to have made contact attempts with staff at a department she did not belong to, contact attempts that are described as “pushy”. Daria Rudneva tells Ekot that she was not aware that the university had reported her to the Security Service. She believes the accusations are laughable. – I am honestly shocked by the stupidity, she says. Over the past year, Daria Rudneva has taken a few occasional courses at Stockholm University. Ekot has spoken to Thors Hans Hansson, professor emeritus of theoretical physics at Stockholm University, and member of the Royal Academy of Sciences. – She has been engaged in pure basic research, trying to understand certain exotic states of matter. It has no military application whatsoever, Thors Hans Hansson tells Sveriges Radio. In Russia, Daria Rudneva has worked at the Skoltech technical university in Moscow. It is currently under sanctions from both the EU and the US. According to the US, it has had close cooperation with the Russian military for almost a decade, Ekot reports. During her time as a visiting researcher at Stockholm University, she has traveled to Russia to meet with her supervisor and work on her thesis in mathematics, among other things. Ekot has also interviewed Fredrik Hallström, chief of operations at Säpo. However, he does not want to comment on the individual case, but says that it is about an overall assessment when they make a recall. – We must ensure that technology, research and such that is worthy of protection remains in Sweden, he tells Sveriges Radio. Eva-Lena Hannerfors is an assistant lawyer at the Asylum Office and Daria Rudneva's public counsel. She says that Daria Rudneva applied for an extended residence permit to pursue doctoral studies in the spring of 2022. A first deportation decision was made on December 29, 2023, based on a statement from Säpo. In April 2024, the case was referred back to the Migration Board and the decision was overturned, due to new information that came in regarding Daria Rudneva's studies. On June 17, 2024, the Swedish Migration Board made a new decision on deportation and re-entry ban for Daria Rudneva, according to Eva-Lena Hannerfors. It is this decision that has now been appealed to the Migration Court. While waiting for the decision, Daria Rudneva has the right to stay in Sweden. – I of course disagree with the assessment made about her. I cannot go into the details of Säpo's statement about her case because it is given with reservations, says Eva-Lena Hannerfors. She continues: – We do not have complete transparency into the Security Service's assessment of why she is considered a security threat with reference to confidentiality. It is a frustrating situation, because how can you safeguard a client's rights if all the information that is being held against the client is not given?
