Second Punic War Lesson Bernd Thu, 20 Feb 2025 15:52:02 GMT No. 25485779 [Kohl] [Report thread]
Rome worried about growing wealth of Carthage and wanted to force Carthage to a war in way that would be supported by all rich people of Rome - to gather enough funds without a political backlash. So, Rome want a pretext, a justification for the war. In Carthage sphere of influence there was a city-state - Saguntum. Rome intervened in internal politics of Saguntum and supported a puppet-government loyal to Rome - basically staged a coup. Then Rome declared itself a protector of Saguntum. Then Saguntum, which should be friendly to Carthage for its own survival, under the puppet government started acting hostile and provoking against Carthage. In the end Saguntum even sent an excursion into Carthage territory pretending to chase down some outlaws (terrorists? lol). Finally Carthage snapped and besieged Saguntum. When Carthage took over Saguntum all people in Saguntum were killed. Including the puppet government and all their children. The Second Punic War begun. Rome won it. And destroyed Carthage. But while Carthage was defeated and destroyed it didn't bring back to life all the foolish Saguntum simps of Rome. I wonder if Finland, Latvia, and Estonia know about Punic wars and the fate of Saguntum. And if they do why do they want to fall to the same fate themselves? Are they stupid?

The people of Saguntum committed mass suicide after eight months of besiegement because they'd rather die than being subjected to Carthaginian rule. They weren't all mass executed.

Rome took advantage of Sanguntum, but the hostility from Sanguntum didn't come from nothing. If you're looking for parallels that's it.

Saguntum would have been destroyed either way, your entire arguments collapses when you use your brain and realize that Rome would eventually invade it too. The only lesson here is don't live in the borderlands between massive empires, anything else is low IQ. Next.

>>25485779 We live in a peaceful age. The fears of the modern age aren't violent death, it's impotence and meaningless existance. While Russia is the Third Rome, your example still doesn't apply. Every time we conquered something, we treated the subjects well enough unless they were completely subhuman, but still spared even them, foolishly. They risk nothing, only cockholes were stupid enough to fight in the war. Modern Baltics will squal, piss themselves and run. Maybe Poland will stay, but we don't care. We'll just take over and treat them as citizens again. Our crippling weakness is inability to properly finish hostile nations or ideologies due to corruption.
